The Atrium Restaurant - 10 Cambridge Street, Edinburgh- 0131 228 8882
International fine dining, with a reputation to match, if a touch on the expensive side.
Bann's Vegetarian Cafe - St Mary's Street, Edinburgh - 0131 226 1112
Established vegetarian restaurant in the old town, just off the Royal Mile .
Cafe St Honore - 34 Thistle Street Lane North West, Edinburgh - 0131 226 2211
I love this place, its small, intimate and very French. The food is also of a distinctly 'french' persuasion. I Love it !
The Caledonian Hotel, Consort Restaurant - 4 Princes Street, Edinburgh
-0131 459 9988
This is one of the most high class hotels in the city. Its present claim to fame is that Sir Sean Connery goes there to have a steak. Pricy !
The Dome Restaurant - 14 George Street, Edinburgh- 0131 624 8624
International, modern, can be noisy (called a buzz), the place to see and be seen.
Beautiful bar/restaurant.
Dubh Prais Restaurant - 123b High Street, Edinburgh- 0131 557 5732
Modern French/Scottish, run by owner-chef. Small, intimate
cellar.
Harvey Nick's - St Andrews Square, Edinburgh- 0131
Above the famous clothing store on the 'top floor' it affords excellent views of the city and castle. The "in" place with the upwardly mobile people of the city. The food is different and good.
Fishers in the City Bistro - 58 Thistle Street - 0131 225 5109
An expansion of their already very successful Leith bistro. Bigger and noisier, but reports from my wife say it is just as good. Having recently visited it myself I found it better than Leith. I give it full marks.
Hadrians Restaurant - 1 Princes Street, Edinburgh- 0131 557 5000
Part of the Balmoral Hotel, serving a very high standard of modern Scottish cuisine.
Henderson's Salad Table and Bistro - 94 Hanover Street - 0131 225 2131
Nearly as old as me, it was the first veggy restaurant in Edinburgh and was started
in 1963 by a local farmer's wife, selling her own produce.
La Lanterna Ristorante - 83 Hanover Street - 0131 226 3090
Traditional Italian, good value quality pastas and wines. Toni will keep you on your toes!
Living Room - 237 Cowgate, Edinburgh - 0131 225 4628
waiting to try it.
La P'tite Folie - 61 Frederick Street, Edinburgh - 0131 225 7983
As it sounds this is a French establishment and provides a very good, fairly low cost, good value meal. They also have a plave at 9 Randolph Place, off Queensferry Street.
McKirdy's Steak House - 151 Morrison Street - 0131 229 6660
They call themselves "the Steak House", which is perhaps an overstatement, but still good value.
Oloroso - 33 Castle Street, Edinburgh - 0131 226 7614
A very good menu, great service, pleasant ambience, with a great view of the Castle from its 'roof top' location. The Champagne is however not as good as Harvey Nicks.
Outsider - 15 George IV Bridge, - 226 3131
This is a 'Modern Eating House' with an excellent variety of dishes, all their 'starters' double as "main' dishes, the "Mussels" get me every time, as do the waitresses.
Point Hotel Restaurant - 34 Bread Street - 0131 221 5555
International Scottish restaurant which is very good value, and trendy.
Plaisir du Chocolat - Canongate, Royal Mile - 0131 556 9524
A new addition to the city, making a big impression with its lovely cakes and pastries. Also serving lunches, although the name speaks for itself - anything chocolate.
Prego Restorante - 38 St Mary's Street - 0131 557 5754
Certainly one of my very favourite Italian Restaurants in the city. The Seafood Risotto is a must! Pascale I feel has missed his true persuasion as an 'Undertaker', but what the heck his food is good.
Rick's Hotel - 55a Frederick Street - 0131 622 7800
Recently voted one of the best hotels in the world - they must have gone on a really good day: it is good, but not that good. The lunches are fairly good value for the price and very filling.
Stac Polly Restaurant - 8-10 Grindlay Street - 0131 556 2231
Modern Scottish, one of two Stac Polly restaurants in the town, specialising in Scottish produce.
Valvona & Crolla Cafe Bar - 19 Elm Row, Edinburgh - 0131 556 6066
Where do I start with this one? In my opinion the food is 'pretentious' with a 'healthy eating' label, this is meant to make it OK to pay £12.95 for a Toasted Lettuce and Ham Sandwich, by the way that is what was on the plate. The food and establishment thrive on the 'Old Italy', 'Healthy Label' and their 'charges' fit this Bill also. (excuse the pun)
The Witchery Restaurant - 352 Castle Hill - 0131 225 5613
Modern Scottish - at the top end of the 'tourist' restaurants, it is comfortably and imaginatively laid out and of a high culinary standard.
Local pubs serving food:
The New Bell - 233-235 Causewayside - 0131 668 1573
Does a good value middle-of-the-road lunch and dinner, with a pre-theatre two course special in the evening. Main advantage is that it is close to the house.
The Braidburn - 200 Mayfield Road - 0131 667 3867
Privately owned by Lenny and Ann Jack, who have a 'hands on' approach, does a full menu throughout the day until 9.30 pm. Food is served in all areas of the bar, but it is 'no smoking' in the bright conservatory restaurant. My 'son' is head chef. Very much on the style of one of the better 'English' Pub Food outlets.
Most pubs do limited food during the day.
Edinburgh Local Pubs (Traditional):
The Old Bell - 233-235 Causewayside - 0131 668 1573
Needs some air conditioning, but if you don't mind a smoky pub, this has all the right products.
Leslie's Bar - 57 Ratcliffe Terrace - 0131 667 5957
Very much a traditional Scottish bar with few frills but an excellent quality of beer and a variety of spirits.
Swany's Bar - 1 Ratcliffe Terrace - 0131 667 8023
A small locals' bar, good quality fresh air. Friendly customers, products good, but the staff can be a bit dull.
Leith (sur mer) Restaurants:
Martin Wishart's Restaurant - 54 The Shore Leith - 0131 553 3557
At this moment in time, this is by far my favourite restaurant, and rightly deserves its Michelin Rosette. The food is imaginative, tasty, and beautifully presented. They offer a 'five course' tasting menu.
EDINBURGHS PREMIERE RESTAURANT
Daniel's Restaurant - 88 Commercial Street, Leith - 0131 553 5933
For years the owner had a very successful up-market restaurant which he the sold and opened this very popular, friendly and busy bistro restaurant.
Fishers Bistro - 1 The Shore, Leith - 0131 554 5666
Well known among local people for the selection and quality of its fish. They do however serve other items for the non fish eater.
Skippers Bistro - 1a Dock Place, Leith - 0131 554 1018
Famously known as once being the toilets for the dock workers, this restaurant evolved in 1980 when no other trendy restaurants were in the area, and has stood the test of time. Recently changed ownership, it still specialises in fish with an add-on mixed menu.
The Shore Restaurant - 3-4 The Shore, Leith - 0131 553 5080
A friendly, and at times a little noisy, fish restaurant which has also been there for many years, and has stood the test of time.
The Britannia Spice Restaurant - 150 Commercial Street, Leith - 0131
555 2255
This an Indian, Chinese, Thai, Vietnamese etc., all under one roof. As they claim
to have a chef from every country, it has a good reputation, and it must also have one hell of a size of a kitchen. Ask to have you wine opened in front of you if it comes to the table already with the cork out.
The King's Wark - The Shore, Leith - 0131 554 9260
Modern Scottish fayre fifty-two weeks of the year. It is good value.
The Waterfront Bistro and Wine Bar - 1c Dock Place, Leith - 0131 554
7427
Originally opened and run by the man who opened Skippers, the late Ian Ruthven,
who then moved his success formula across the road and did it again. This is a
friendly bistro with a good turnover of food and wine and offers either comfortable
indoor or outdoor eating and drinking.
Out of Edinburgh:
Champanay Restaurant - Borrowstone Cross, Linlithgow - 01506 834532
International fine dining - steaks and a huge speciality wine list.
La Potiniere Restaurant - Main Street, Gullane. East Lothian - 01620 843214
This is an Award winning Restaurant (one Michelin Star) which for some reason the owners, David and Hilary Brown decided to sell after many successful years. It is now owned by Mary Runciman and Keith Marley, both of whom have extensive catering experience. The style has changed from a set meal at set times, to a short 'menu', 3 Starters, 2 Mains and 2 Puddings or cheese, coffee is inclusive. Have had a couple of reports, and recently tried it myself, althouigh not the 'cream with everything' method of the Browns, I doubt that you will need to book 12 months in advance now.
We strongly recommend that early reservations be made with most of the above restaurants.
